- Reviewed in the United States on February 10, 2024This is why when I saw this 239 page hardcover book (Spartan Fit! 30 days, transform your mind, transform your body, commit to grip by Joe De Sena, founder of the Spartan race) while browsing on Amazon I immediately decided to purchase it.
There are lots of things to love about this book. This excellent volume provides valuable and specific information how to get in shape to compete in one of the most challenging types of warrior competition events ever created the Spartan race. This is a practical and incredible guide to anyone who is interested in getting into Spartan warrior physical and mental shape.
This fantastic book covers the following topics: ‘Blindfolded and bound, get to the starting line, the legend of Sparta, Agoge, race basics, the seven pillars, the 30-day plan to Spartan fit, Spartan elite, the case for the Olympics, Double whammy, Spartan training programs” and other informational material.
Anyone who desires to challenge themselves, as every warrior must do to in order to call themselves a warrior, should not just read this book, but should do the basic 30-day Spartan plan as taught in this book. Even though I am a very old man with various physical and health issues I intend to do the best I can in various warrior challenges.
Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Tactical Principles of the most effective Combative Systems).

Or, to make things really simple: Go outside right now and run as far as you can. Then do as many burpees as you can. Then run, walk, or crawl home. Eat whole foods, skip dessert, don’t get drunk, get some sunshine, take cold showers, lift something heavy, use the stairs, meditate or pray, find someone to love. Lights out at 8 p.m.
There’s your program. Go do it.
Look, if being fit were as easy as having a list of the right exercises, the Internet would have ended the obesity crisis. There are a gazillion exercise programs out there! The team at Spartan Race posts a new workout every day—it’s all there, it’s all free. We have all this information at our fingertips. Lack of information isn’t your main obstacle.
Your main obstacle is you.
You are also your greatest opportunity.
And that’s as true for me as it is for anyone.
The purpose of this book is to help you overcome any physical or mental obstacle— and to achieve the opportunity that lives inside of you. To become Spartan Fit.”
~ Joe De Sena from Spartan Fit!
Joe De Sena is the founder of the Spartan Race.
He’s also, as Angela Duckworth, author of Grit, tells us: “a paragon of grit” who “shows you how you’re capable of so much more than you think.”
A paragon of grit. That’s the perfect description. De Sena is *extraordinarily* inspiring. He once completed the Badwater Ultramarathon (135 miles), the Lake Placid Ironman (140.6 miles) and a short Vermont trail run (100 miles) in one week. (!) Now, he’s on a mission to help people optimize their lives and get Spartan Fit.
We covered his first book Spartan Up! which was also fantastic. For this one, he teamed up with John Durant—who wrote The Paleo Manifesto. Spartan Up! fired me up creatively (and got me doing burpees). This book fired me up to take my fitness to the next level. I’m signed up for my first Spartan Race and I’m committed to getting Spartan Fit!
Let's explore some of my favorite Big Ideas:
1. Get to the Starting Line - So you'll know at the finish line.
2. Obstacle Immunity - Is what we're after.
3. Decisions - A thousand simple (+ easy) ones.
4. You Can Do This - Difficult vs. impossible.
5. 7 Pillars - of Spartan Training.
Here’s to the Spartan mind and energy to make that gift to the world a reality!

- Reviewed in the United States on August 10, 2016I am actually working through the 30 day program in the book. If you enjoy the introductory chapters of the book and are looking for more of the mindset that Joe De Sena works from, grab Spartan Up!
As a way of seeing how they recommend preparing for the Spartan races, I am working through the 30 day program. As others have said, there is nothing "new" here, but it is based in solid principles of training and is a good starting point for anyone looking to get healthier and/ or prepare to take on a Spartan Race.
The focus is on moving your body well first and foremost with some odd objects thrown in the mix. While the methodologies may not be new, have a plan is always a good thing. Trying to stick to the plan and doing the things that are not your favorite (60-minute run or 100 burpees or cardio in general) or outside of what you might program for yourself is one of the bonuses on this book.
The book does a good job of introducing you to the Spartan ethos and then has pretty good examples of how to perform the exercises as well as looks at the common obstacles for Spartan Races. If you are just looking for a good starting place or interested in trying something a little different then this book might be what you are looking for.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 23, 2017Haven't read a book since 1990 other than the Bible. This was an incredible eye opener on my will and desire. It has shown me that I have been limiting myself. I love the human life struggle stories and I get power form thinking of them when I am in a bad place in a race or life circumstance. It was inspiring and even in some ways life changing to me changing some goals and even toughening up some parenting discipline. I will do another Spartan race and apply some info from the book. I was pumped to apply what I learned form it. Be strong and of good courage!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 14, 2022Great stories, workouts, and recipes. All around great book. I was hooked from the start. Whether you plan on running a Spartan Race or not, I’d recommend this book to anyone. AROO!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 30, 2018This book provides you with some basic nutrition and workouts in order to prepare you for your first Spartan Race. If you already do some sort of physical training, you probably won’t find anything surprising. What is truly great about this book thw first half filled with motivating stories and advice on building the mental toughness to conquer any obstacle in life, not just a Spartan race.

This book is a great no nonsense guide to getting fit & healthy. And if you’re already in good shape, this book can shake up your training and get you in even better shape.
The Author is someone who practices what they preach!
Listen & learn from someone like Joe De Sena, who’s done the work and achieved so much both in business, and also in accomplishing so many physical endurance challenges!
