Protecting Yourself From Being Assaulted Part 3

This entry is part 3 of 3 in the series Protecting Yourself From Being Assaulted

In the previous articles, we’ve learnt to identify aggressive body language and adrenaline effects on the body.

However, what can you do to survive an assault?

There are 3 things:

  • Learn to identify agressive signals and avoid such situations at the first sign of trouble
  • Flee from the attacker(s) or fight when left without a choice
  • Protect the vulnerable parts of your body and be beaten up if there is no escape route

Avoid At The First Sign Of Trouble

Man displaying aggressive body language

Man displaying aggressive body language

The true ninja avoids trouble. The moment you detect signs of an impending assault, remove yourself or your loved ones from the situation. It is stupid to play hero, when it can cost you your life.

Attempt to dissipate the situation by words.

Flee If You Can, Or Fight If You Have No Choice

However, when left without choice, mentally prepare yourself to defend yourself. Run away, put distance between yourself and the attacker. Have barriers between yourself and the attacker.

Use any weapon you can find or improvise from at your discretion. The weapon can be turned against you. And the laws on injuring/killing an attacker out of self-defense differs in various countries. However, if you decide to use a weapon, do not hesitate when using the weapon. Hesitation will cause any technique you use to be ineffective.

You can carry pocket weapons like the Kubotan. This weapon is innocent enough to be carried as a key chain and won’t cause permanent damage. It can be used to make your punches/strikes extremely painful and is effective even when used to enhance joint locks. If you want to buy kubotans, you can get it from W.O.N.’s store.

If Already Under Attack, Protect Vulenerable Parts Of The Body

If you are being beaten up already, use stronger parts of your body to protect vulnerable areas. In a worst case scenario, pretend to pass out or have a seizure after taking a few punches. This may prompt the attackers to stop and flee.

Whatever course of action you take, the end result must be the same. You’ve got to escape and survive.

I’ll provide you with a self-defense mini course resource shortly.

Protecting Yourself From Being Assaulted Part 2

This entry is part 2 of 3 in the series Protecting Yourself From Being Assaulted

We have discussed the effects of adrenaline in the first article of this series. I have picked certain easy-to-identify signs to elaborate on. Please note that these body signs must be interpreted in conjuction with the attacker’s anger.

Also in this article, I will advise you on not responding in a certain way if you want to live. And will show you how to identify a particular body language that almost certainly indicates the attacker is reluctant to fight.

The Face Changes Colour (Signs of Adrenaline)

Facial colour shift from red to greyish pale, indicates adrenaline

Facial colour shift from red to greyish pale, indicates adrenaline

When a person is embarrassed or moderately angry, his face would turn red. Once the red face loses its pallor to paleness, it becomes a highly dangerous situation. It indicates that the attacker’s body has released larged amount of adrenaline and non-adrenaline. Needless to say, the release of such hormones is to prepare the body to fight or flee (in the case of anger, the person would likely fight).

The Eyes Blink Faster (sign of adrenal stress)

Eyes that blink aggressively

Eyes that blink aggressively

The normal blink rate is around 20 times in 1 minute. A significant difference from the normal blink rate reflects a person’s emotional stress. A slow blink rate show calmness in emotions; a fast blink rate indicate stress.

Use your intuition to observe blink rate. It will be unwise to actually count how many times a person blinks.

Sweating In The Face (sign of adrenal stress)

The arrousal of stress causes sweat to appear on a person’s upper lip and above the eyebrows.

Pulsating Arteries (sign of adrenaline)

Look for pulsating arteries at the neck area below the earlobes, behind the lower jaw, at the cheekbones and around the lips. When arteries pulsate noticeably, it means the heart is pumping harder and faster; this is to rush more oxygen throughout the body in preparation for a fight.

The Later Indications of An Assault (aggressive body language)

The above few are early indications of an impending assault. When it gets increasingly serious, the angry person would clench his jaws and grind his teeth. This is a reflex action (the reflex to bite) from our primate ancestors. In addition, his fist would be clenched and eyes would be widened in rage. The clenched fist obviously indicates thoughts of aggression by the angered person. And the widened eyes is very much telling the ‘opponent’: I dare you to provoke me further.

What Should You NEVER Do?

The nervous grin is a habit from childhood; smiling out of fear.

The nervous grin is a habit from childhood; smiling out of fear.

When it is obvious that a situation will escalate to an assault, do not smile or grin at the person. Some people would uncounsciously smile at an angry person out of fear. The attacker will interpret your grin as you mocking or challenging him. There was a situation where a person was shot, just because he smiled a nervous grin at the attacker.

The 1 Sign You WANT To See

Of all the signs of an impending assault, this is 1 sign you would want to see because it indicates that the situation has taken a turn for the better.

Man holding bottle shrugs

Man holding bottle shrugs

When the would-be attacker shrugs, it suggests that he/she is in no mood to fight. The shrug is a display of interrelated body gestures that indicates helplessness, resignation and uncertainty. Since the body is in a defensive position when shrugging, it is highly unlikely that a person will attack.

Yet, be alert to your surrounding, especially when there may be more than 1 would-be attacker.

Protecting Yourself From Being Assaulted Part 1

This entry is part 1 of 3 in the series Protecting Yourself From Being Assaulted

For every 1,000 people, 3 offences of aggravated assault are reported in the United States. In the UK, there were nearly 2.2 million incidents of assault and robbery in year 2006. While there are indications of assault cases dropping every year, being physically attacked is very real and can happen to anyone.

Man holding gun

Man holding gun

The worst thing about assault is that the victim is seriously disadvantaged. The odds of you walking away unharmed is very low when there are more than 1 perpetrators of assault. Therefore, it is important to learn how to safeguard yourself and loved ones from an assaultive situation.

To learn about how the dynamics of violence in the real world is like, read the book “Meditations on Violence: A Comparison of Martial Arts Training & Real World Violence“ by Sgt Rory Miller. Sgt Rory Miller is a veteran correction officer who experienced jail fights and tactical operations.

Staying true to the ninja way of awareness, we shall learn to detect the warning signs of an impending assault. These warning signs are the behaviour, body language and physiological responses of the would-be attacker.

Adrenaline is pumped throughout the would-be attacker’s body before he attacks. Adrenaline is a hormone that is released during a fight or flight situation and it causes noticeable effects on the body. If you train your mind to detect these effects, you should be able to ‘predict’ and avoid a possible assaultive situation.

You know that adrenaline is coursing through your potential attacker’s body when he:

  • blinks more frequently
  • breathes faster
  • sweats in the face
  • changes pallor in the face from normal to red
  • changes pallor in the face from red to pale (dangerous indicator)
  • pulsates in the facial arteries noticably

When you detect the signs above in an angry person, it indicates that he is becoming very agitated. Be especially careful when his facial colour shifts from reddish pink to pale. This is a nearly definite sign that he is now experiencing uncontrollable rage.

Ninja, Parkour and Martial Arts Sponsor

Other than the above signs, the following are body language behaviour associated with aggression. At this point, brace yourself to fight, flee or attempt to calm the situation.

The person is seen:

  • Clenching his jaw muscles
  • Clenching his fists
  • Widening his eyes so much that you can see the whites of his eyes
  • Becoming unusually silent after an episode of rage

It is wise to know that fear and aggression are related. We fight or flee when we are afraid. When a person chooses fighting over fleeing, he feels that he has no choice in the matter. That is why it can be a dangerous situation.

For details on interpreting the attacker’s body signs, please read part 2.

Ninja Things To Do: Origami Shuriken

Due to the threat of terrorism, no longer are we allowed to carry arms or weapons in most countries. This, however, doesn’t mean that ninja will lack their tools.

Even in ancient Japan, commoners were forbidden to carry swords and other weapons. Yet the ninja, carried weapons, which seemed like ordinary items. A farmer’s rake, for example, could be used as a weapon. They made use of society’s assumptions of what was safe and unsafe.

This article shall teach you the uses of an origami shuriken (ninja throwing star). In the eyes of society, a throwing star made out of paper is harmless. The origami throwing star is deemed as a child’s toy. Is it really so?

The ancient ninja used shurikens to distract as opposed to kill. One could do the same with paper shuriken.

It could be a tool to help the modern ninja to escape by diverting the enemy’s attention to the shuriken. And, unlike the old shuriken, the paper shuriken is lighter to carry, and can be thrown swiftly.

If you want to search for affordable ninja weapons, please use our search store.

Here’s a video tutorial by PacGuy765, that teaches you how to fold them.

Be creative. Vary the colour, size, and paper type to suit the conditions of your ninja mission.

The Secrets of Stealth

Stealth is the art of remaining undetected; the art of being ‘invisible’. To be ‘invisible’, the ninja has to understand how a person’s presence is detected.

A person detects presence by his eyes and ears. The ninja must learn to fool the enemy’s sense of sight and hearing. In addition, when there are dogs guarding the premises, a ninja should avoid being detected by the dog’s sense of smell.

How do the eyes see

To isolate how the eyes detect presence, let us pretend that it is dark. The first way to detect a person’s presence in the dark is movement. The second way is the shadow or outline of a person’s silhouette. Lastly is colour because the darkness inhibits the detection of colour.

So, the eyes see these thing in the following order:

  • Movement
  • Silhouette
  • Colour

Next, when we hear a noise, our eyes tend to look for the disturbance at our eye level. Very seldom would our eyes look up or low down to seek the cause of the noise.

How To Fool The Eyes

To avoid detection, slow down your movement when sneaking in the dark. If someone is facing you, stop moving. Blend in with the silhouette of natural elements in the environment (trees, huge rocks, furniture). His eyes will be fooled and he will not see you. Unless of course, it is bright enough to see colour.

Conceal yourself in the darkest portion of the shadows while sneaking and hide behind objects and crouch to make yourself appear small.

Be aware of light sources. You do not want to stand in front of a lamp and show your moving shadow. Remember! the eyes see movement first.

How Do The Ears Hear

Hearing ability varies among human beings. But one thing is for sure. When we hear something unfamiliar, it naturally arouses our curiousity. If we are reassured that the noise was imagined or came from something we know, we would cease investigating the source of the noise.

How To Fool The Ears

By not making noise of course! There are several techniques to walk silently, which will be shared in other articles.

What if the terrain you are walking on doesn’t allow you to move silently? Here are some methods to counter the noise.

Method 1

Make use of natural noise to mask your footsteps. A passing aeroplane can cover the sound of footsteps. Take advantage of it to move faster. Don’t do this if someone is directly facing you though. You movement will be noticed.

Method 2

If you need only walk a short distance over noisy surfaces, throw a piece of cloth over the surface to walk on. The cloth will muffle most of the noise.

Method 3

Bring an animal companion to distract the sentry.

While moving in the dark, you accidentally made a noise. The guard’s curiosity will ensure that he investigates the source of the noise. You could let out an animal (maybe a rat) from your bag. When the guard sees the animal, he would think the noise was caused by the animal.

Fooling A Dog’s Nose

I’m sure you’ve heard this tip before. Make sure when you’re sneaking that the wind isn’t blowing your scent towards the dogs.

Conclusion On Stealth

These are some of the principles of stealth. Think out of the box to conceal your presence.

How To See In The Dark

The ninja must be able to see in near darkness to excel in stealth.

The eyes have two types of cells that enable us to see. They are the cone cells and the rod cells. The cone cells see colour and works better when it is bright, whereas the rod cells can see in low light and detect movement. However, it takes up to 30 minutes for the eyes to adjust to the dark.

The Three Steps to Night Vision

1. Allow your eyes to become accustomed to the dark

You can do this by closing your eyes for 10 seconds and then opening them when you first encounter a dark environment. If this is impossible to do, you can either squint both eyes or cover one eye before you enter the dark area.

2. Use your peripheral vision to see

Your direct vision utilises cone cells, which is better at seeing colour in good lighting conditions. However, if you need to see in the dark, use your off-center vision. Look at the environment with the side of your eyes.

You can do so by looking 5 to 10 degrees above, below, or sides of the object.

3. Scan and blink to ensure optimal night vision

Within 5 to 10 seconds of focusing on one point of your peripheral vision, the visual will fade out. Your eyes will become less sensitive to the visual. Therefore scan the area constantly or blink to make sure that your rod cells don’t become desensitised.

What if You Need to Read The Map

If you need to read the map during your mission, you’ll obviously need light. However, the type of light you use can affect your night vision temporarily. Use low-intensity red light to read the map. Red does not affect your night vision as much as white light.

However, please do not use red light for regular reading at home. It is ridiculous and can spoil your eyesight eventually.

Further Enhancements

If you truly want to harness your night vision, try to practice a few times a week at moving around in the dark. Do choose a place safe and familiar to you (your house/backyard). You do not want to be attacked by a wild animal while training.

There are also artificial ways to night vision. Within W.O.N.’s search store are affordable night vision goggles.

The Ninja’s Sense Of Danger Part 1

This entry is part 1 of 3 in the series How To Sense Danger

The ability to sense danger helps a ninja in stealth, fighting and escaping. This state of mind requires the ninja to be aware of his surroundings and be able react quickly to imminent threats.

Awareness of his surroundings, allows the ninja to anticipate dangerous situations and be mentally prepared to deal with it.

What Is Awareness?

Awareness is noticing, knowing and responding.

When you are aware, you know:

  • what is happening around you; to guard against immediate threats
  • what are your vulnerabilities; to guard against an enemy targeting your weak spots
  • what is in your surroundings; to use as weapons, barriers or escape routes

The goal of being aware is to equip you with information to protect yourself and your mission. This information you gather, makes you more competent at responding to danger.

However, it seems impossible to be consciously aware of so many things at once. How are you supposed to notice things, assess your vulnerabilities and seek objects in your surroundings constantly?

The good news is, you are already aware to a certain extent. Everyone has a natural ability to sense danger. It’s just that some of us are more acute at this ability. The key is to enhance the natural ability you have.

Find out more about your natural danger-sensing ability in part 2. [ The Ninja's Sense of Danger Part 2 ]

Logen L.

The Ninja’s Sense Of Danger Part 2

This entry is part 2 of 3 in the series How To Sense Danger

The truth is, everyone has the sense of danger. An average person is aware of his surroundings. Perhaps not as acute as a ninja, but the ability is there.

This sense of danger is better known as intuition. We’re not talking about some supenatural force here.

Intuition refers to your brain’s ability to pick up tiny unusual signs in your surroundings. It then subconsciously connects those signs together and warn you of danger. Remember the funny feeling that someone has touched your belongings, although everything seems to be tidy? This is intuition at work, picking up very tiny details.

The Key To Gaining Awareness

Since everyone has a certain extent of awareness, the key is to enhance that existing awareness.

When you use your awareness (or intuition), you are doing three things subconsciously:

  • You notice people, and objects
  • You assess what you notice (if they are threats)
  • Where there is immediate danger, your body prepares itself to run or fight

For awareness and the sense of danger to be effective, the ninja must be able to detect things quickly. Because, only when you detect, then can you assess for danger. If you are unable to detect threats in time, you won’t be able to assess for danger.

The Hindrance of Awareness (Sense of Danger)

You want to enhance your natural ability to be aware, but how do you do it.

The natural hindrance to your sense of danger is distraction. People become distracted all the time. They get distracted when they are bored, tired, afraid, angry, sad and so on. They get so caught up with their emotions and thoughts that they fail to notice the things around them.

How then can you eliminate distraction, and enhance your senses to be more aware? We deal with the how-to in part 3.

Logen L.

The Ninja’s Sense Of Danger Part 3

This entry is part 3 of 3 in the series How To Sense Danger

The ninja must eliminate distractions and heighten his senses. He does this to enhance his awareness and sense of danger.

The below reveals the key to:

  • reduce distraction
  • heighten senses

Heighten Your Senses

To heighten your senses means to make them more sensitive.

The consequence of heighten senses is more information, which can make you distracted. Your goal is to notice whatever you sense, without assessing them. Trust your intuition to do it automatically for you.

Now, down to the specifics. Condition yourself to notice things (not assess) that are suspicious to the eyes and ears.

1. Be sensitive to sound

Spend 10 to 15 minutes daily to sit down and close your eyes. Notice the sounds in your surroundings, and mentally identify the source of the noise. This exercise is meant to make your ears sensitive to unusual sounds that you cannot identify the source of.

2. Use your peripheral vision often

Make it a habit to be aware of what is at the sides of your vision. While looking at the sides of your vision, maintain vision of what is in front of you. The sides of your vision is adept at catching sudden movements. This allows to detect immediate threats from your left or right.

Do not be so distracted with looking at the sides, without noticing what is happening in front of you!

Once this becomes a habit, you’ll use your peripheral vision without even thinking.

3. Use your ears to see behind

While moving about, keep your ears open to detect presence behind you. It is useful when you are walking alone at night.

4. The shadows and reflections tell secrets

Make it a habit to occasionally glance at the shadows or reflections of a mirror/glass door. They can expose someone’s presence.

5. Feel the wind

Someone’s presence can be revealed by the wind. If someone is stalking you silently, and there comes a breeze blowing behind you, it will be blocked by that person. That is how you can detect the person’s presence.

Remember again, if you make the above 4 into habits, you will be able to notice things subconsciously. That is the key. You want to notice things without thinking about noticing things.

Reduce Your Distraction

Let me clarify what I mean by distraction. Distraction comes in the form of thoughts and emotions. When you are bored, you have self-entertaining thoughts. When you are nervous, your thoughts seem to whirl by. And to be honest, it is impossible to eliminate this type of distraction completely.

I’m not telling you to be emotionless! Ninja are human beings too and have every right to having emotions.

Instead, I’m suggesting that a ninja should keep the mind calm and relaxed. Here’s an analogy.

Imagine two buckets of water. One bucket’s water is completely still. While the other is constantly shaken, so that the water keeps rippling. If I throw a rock into each bucket, which bucket of water will indicate that there was a disturbance of its water surface by the rock?

Of course the bucket of still water. You will be able to see the ripples caused by the rock easily than the bucket of moving water.

The mind is the same. To be aware of your surroundings, the mind must be like the calm waters so that you can easily see any ripples that occur. When the mind is calm, one is able to process information faster.

To become calmer and relaxed you should:

  • Meditate daily for 5 minutes at least
  • Observe your moods and what triggers your moods (gradually learn to catch any extreme emotions before they occur)
  • Do not be frustrated at failure when you lose your cool
  • Join Tai Chi, Tai Quan or Aikido classes (Aikido emphasises that one should be relaxed when neutralising an attack; this is because, when the mind is relaxed, techniques can be executed more fluidly and effectively)

General Advice

Let’s bring the how-to back to the concept of intuition. Intuition is subconscious; you don’t have to think about it, to detect suspicious things.

The aim of the above how-to is to make your awareness and sense of danger subconscious. You have to constantly do the above to make them into habits. And remember, habits are subconscious acts.

Good luck.

The Skills Ninja Should Have

While each ninja had their own way and path to follow, the common thing among them all are their skills. (more…)
