Martial Arts Intro

The skills of combat is part of a ninja’s arsenal.

To acquire defensive, offensive or both combat skills, sign up for a martial arts class. That is the best way to learn.

Being an urban ninja, you’d obviously want to take up Ninjutsu. However, if Ninjutsu classes are not offered in your area, you could take up some other martial art. Some examples would be Jujitsu, Aikido, Aikijutsu and so on.

Choose a martial art, which incorporates joint-locks and strikes for efficiency. Cross-train between two martial arts that complement each other if are able to. For example, Aikido teaches you purely defensive techniques utilising joint-locks and throws. You could cross-train with Taekwondo to learn kicks and punches.

Alternatively, you can take up video courses from a legitimate martial art organisation. After sending them a video demonstrating your understanding and moves of the martial art, you will be awarded the rank. While you may learn useful combat techniques this way, you will take much longer to master the martial art. Reason being that you have no instructor to correct you mistakes.

Check out some video courses from Budo Ryu Ninjutsu.

  1. Yo!

I want to be a Ninja. Can’t find an exact reason, maybe because I’m really bored on my spare time. Maybe because I’m attracted to combat and want to be strong, but I get knocked down each time I mess up with someone. Maybe because I like climbing, or walking roofs. Maybe even just to be cool…

It seems to be a natural push(Hope it’s correct to say ‘push’, I’m not English. Please correct me if I’m wrong).

Anyway, I go to a Material art class that has focus mainly on Karate. We will also learn some self defense at some stage, and learn some moves from other material arts. The aim of it is to help us to protect ourselves.
Think It’s OK as a material art, or should I get a Ninjutsu Black-Belt DVD? I’m sure I will be able to make it if I’ll be motivated. It’s great to see a site that will support me along my way! Keep going! Hopefully I’ll find a friend and will start training soon…

    Hi Michael,

do avoid fighting whenever you can. A true martial artist or modern ninja would only fight to defend themselves, their loved ones and their principles (or way of life).

I would advise you to train in martial arts with the mind of application. You see, combat is not only about knowing techniques. You must be able to use the fighting techniques against someone who really wants to hurt you and are resisting your techniques.

There is no point in perfecting the form of your techniques if you do not perfect your knowledge of how to use it. That’s why I suggest you practice with a partner using half speed to understand the application of your Karate techniques. By perfecting your moves and understanding, you will be able to defend yourself.

In my opinion, all martial arts aim for the same thing: discipline and defense. But, you need to learn how to defend against someone really attacking you.

As for the DVD, I would prefer that you go for actual classes because the Sensei can correct you if you’re wrong. The DVD can be used to remember what you have learnt in class.

Also, you seem to like Parkour. I’d recommend that you get the Parkour DVD to learn the basics and then join a local parkour clan in your country.

I’m glad that you liked the site. Ganbatte in your way of the ninja (or combat). ;)

  3. Well, I have read what you wrote and I do understand that I need to avoid fights, I usually do. The only case I really want to fight but I’m afraid to do so is, when walking outside alone or with a friend and being insulted(REAL insult, not ‘idiot’ or ‘stupid’) for no reason by some bullies. Sometimes they even mess with me in pairs or more, just because bullies like to do so.

As about the Karate, I kept searching and found two other classes close to me – a Kung Fu Wing Chun school, and a Krav Maga school. I want to go to Krav Maga, I plan to try it soon. It’s like Ninjutsu – focuses on the most effective way of taking your enemy down. It’s an israeli self-defense art, so it will teach me defending from guns, bats, knives, thus, defending incoming strikes, disarming the enemy, and sometimes using them myself.

I feel that I’m ready to start training now. (Sorry for another long comment)

  4. Put my name into youtube Paul Lugg and see the Bujinkan budo Taijutsu art for yourself and you can see if its for you.

    Keep safe

  5. I have to be unbiased here and recommend the Krav Maga, although I am a JKD instructor which is heavily influenced by Wing Chun.

Wing Chun in a traditional sense is okay but Krav Maga is more complete in that it teaches you to fight in all ranges.

  6. Hey there.

  7. Hi, I have been practicing dim mak on a dummy I made with a coat hanger and boxes and stuff in my basement.
What do you think of the fighting style dim mak for a ninja?

  8. A true Martial Artist does not show fear, and knows their limits as a person and expert. They do not insult people, and are able to channel their emotions unlike regular people. Which doing so, gives you the upper rank of everyone except your elders, you do not act tough because of your knowledge only respectful.

  9. dont be happy with just one style in fact you dont even have to look for a school . if your recoursfull you can learn martial arts in unlikely places . it also helps if you have a training partner learn by doing thats the best way .
